PETALING JAYA: Communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa has shot down Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that Najib Razak had proposed another candidate for the prime minister’s post after Anwar allegedly had enough support from MPs to form a new government in 2020.
On Thursday, Anwar claimed that he was asked to give an assurance that Najib’s court cases would be discontinued after statutory declarations (SDs) in support of him as prime minister were signed — with the opposition leader stating that he refused to do so.
Anwar said that as a result, the former prime minister proposed another candidate, thus denying the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman the post.
“I hope Anwar stops all these lies. Don’t try to blame Najib for your failure. That’s slander.
“Anwar failed because he was unable to convince the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that he had enough support when he was granted an audience in October 2020. This came after he claimed he had convincing support from MPs to be appointed prime minister to replace Muhyiddin Yassin,” Annuar said in a Facebook post.
He added that even the MPs had denied this.
“The supposed claim that Najib had proposed another candidate is also slander,” he said.
In September 2020, PKR president Anwar announced that he had secured “strong, formidable and convincing” support from MPs to form a new government, six months after Perikatan Nasional came to power following the collapse of the PH government in February 2020.
On Friday, Najib said it was “absolutely untrue” that he signed a SD backing Anwar as prime minister in return for an assurance that his corruption cases would be dropped, adding that he had never asked anyone for help to do so.
