Malaysia qualify for hockey World Cup

JAKARTA: India hammered Indonesia 16-0 in their last Asia Cup Group A match today to drag Malaysia, Japan and South Korea into the World Cup in January.

World Cup hosts India are automatic qualifiers.

On Saturday, Malaysia will meet Korea while India play Japan in the Super-Four stage.

India needed 15 goals to pip Pakistan, who lost 3-2 to Japan in an earlier match, for the Super-Four, and they scored one extra at the GBK Stadium today.

Japan topped Group A with nine points, while India, on four, finished second ahead of Pakistan on goal difference.

Now, all four Super-Four teams are assured of their spots in the India World Cup.

India scored through Rajbhar Pawan (10th and 11th minutes), Uttam Singh (14th), S.V. Sunil (19th, 24th), Xess Nilam Sanjeep (20th), Selvam Karthi (40th, 56th), Lakra Birendra (41st), Tirkey Dipsan (42), Belimagga Sudev (45th, 46th, 55th), Dipsan Tirkey (47th, 59th, 59).

In Group B, Malaysia hammered Bangladesh 8-1 to top their group with nine points.

Malaysia scored through Razie Rahim (fourth, 14th, 30th), Faizal Saari (24th, 31st, 46th), Najmi Farizal (41st) and Ashran Hamsani (60th). Ashraful Islam replied for Bangladesh in the 21st minute.

South Korea finished second with six points after a 5-1 win over Oman.
