SEGAMAT: Be vigilant about Covid-19 but thanks to the vaccines and booster shot, a majority of those who contracted the virus showed only mild or no symptoms, says Tan Sri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

“Mostly those who have gotten their booster shot and tested positive are in category one and two.

“Although we are seeing many daily cases of late, between 20,000 and 30,000, let’s not be afraid because we have taken the booster jab.

“That means we have a certain level of immunity, which makes the infection mild,” said the former health minister and MCA president when meeting with representatives of non-governmental organisations at the Chaah MCA branch in Chaah here on Sunday (Feb 27).

As everyone in attendance was required to conduct an RTK test in advance, a woman in her 60s was tested positive.

Showing no symptoms or discomfort, Dr Chua said she probably had no idea she has been infected.

“With the booster shot, infections are mostly in category one and two today, just like the lady. So let’s not be afraid,” he said.

Dr Chua, who is a former Labis MP, was on the ground to campaign for MCA’s Bekok candidate Tan Chong, who is the Labis MCA division deputy chief in the Johor state election.

Also present was Labis MCA division chief Datuk Chua Tee Yong.

Dr Chua also lauded the National Immunisation Programme for its efficient coverage that protects people from serious infections.

“When we talk about vaccination, no one can deny that our vaccination programme is good.

“Today, 95% of those over 18 have received two jabs of the vaccine, while over 60% of them have gotten their booster dose.

“Our achievement is one of the tops in the world,” he said.

Reiterating that both vaccination and the booster dose helped, Dr Chua said compared with last year when the daily infection was in the range of 30,000 cases with a hospitalisation rate of at least 1,500 cases, there are less than 100 hospitalisations on Sunday.

“So, if you have not gotten your booster shot, let me know and I will arrange for you,” he added.

Calling for support for Tan in Bekok ahead of the Johor state election, Dr Chua said Tan remained familiar with the voters despite losing twice in the last two general elections.

He said voters should not be too emotional but judge their representative based on their work, performance and capability.

“Politicians will make all sorts of promises. It is not the promises that count, but whether or not they can fulfil them. Don’t be easily misled.

“Since 2018, our politics have never been stable. Without stability, eventually, the people are at the losing end,” he said.
