KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 ― Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today claimed the Opposition is fragmented ahead of next month’s Johor state election, with each party gunning for the mentri besar post.

He added that his party was the exception.

“We think we have a good chance, but as far as the Opposition is concerned, they are fighting each other.

“For them, the most important struggle in Johor is to become the MB, not to be a good government, no, but to become the MB.

“Everybody wants to become mentri besar. So there is a difference between them and us,” he told reporters after announcing his party’s aspirations for the Johor state election.

Dr Mahathir was asked his view on how the Opposition parties would fare in the Johor state poll.

“We are alone with one party, but we have a good number of candidates… and I think we can provide the kind of leadership that is needed at this moment in Johor and in Malaysia,” he replied.

The two-time former prime minister was also asked to elaborate on the reason his party planned to only contest in 42 out of the 56 state constituencies up for grabs as Pejuang president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir previously announced on February 11.

“There are some areas which are not suitable, areas where non-Malays are dominant.

“We are not greedy, we just want enough,” Dr Mahathir replied.

“Why contest at all 56 seats and lose all? For what? While for some seats, the loyalty for Umno’s shameless culture is too deep, these people will not vote for Pejuang,” he added
