PETALING JAYA: Seven more PKR candidates were unveiled by party president Anwar Ibrahim for next month’s Johor elections, with two of the candidates seeking re-election to the state assembly.
Ysahruddin Kusni (Bukit Naning) and Khuzzan Abu Bakar (Semerah) were among the more notable names Anwar announced as the party’s candidates in Johor’s northern zone earlier tonight, with a total of 13 names announced during three different events today.
The other names announced tonight at a hotel in Batu Pahat are Johor PKR secretary Naim Jusri (Gambir), Azmi Masrani (Sri Medan), Yoong Thau (Pemanis), Subramani Chami (Buloh Kasap) and Abdullah Sahid (Sg Balang).
Speaking to the crowd before unveiling the candidates, Anwar issued a thinly-veiled warning to the potential assemblymen to stay away from corrupt practices if they were successful in the March 12 elections.
Noting how some politicians from Pakatan Rakyat and its predecessor Pakatan Harapan flaunted their wealth and used their position to enrich themselves and their families when the coalition won power at state and federal levels, he said such practices had no place in his books.
“As great as we humans are, the world of politics is full of challenges and tests – and you have to be strong to withstand it,” he said. “There is no other position like this. This is because the system is broken and corruption is endemic … systemic. If you don’t have a strong will, you will fall.”
Earlier today, Anwar revealed that Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik would be the party’s candidate for Layang Layang, a state seat in Johor’s central zone which falls under the former education minister’s constituency.
Anwar today also announced the party’s candidates for the southern zone – with the most notable being S Gopalakrishnan, who is seeking re-election in Tiram.
The remaining candidates for east and central Johor will be announced in the next two days.
