KUALA LUMPUR: Close to 4,000 military officers and personnel have been deployed to flood-hit states under Ops Murni, says Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said they consist of 204 officers and 3,654 rank-and-file personnel.

“We also mobilised 474 assets including 18 seven-tonne trucks, 174 three-tonne trucks, 29 one-tonne trucks, 131 boats and four helicopters.

“In Terengganu, the Armed Forces will work closely with the state government and other relevant agencies to help victims despite the situation being almost fully recovered.

“The focus and priorities of Ops Murni in Terengganu are to conduct cleanup operations and assist efforts in fixing bridges,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Hishammuddin added that they also assisted the Health Ministry in conducting Covid-19 tests especially on flood victims.

He said the Armed Forces were also prepared to face the possibility of another wave of floods in Terengganu and 1,026 personnel in four teams were on standby to be deployed throughout the state at any time.

“It does not include 182 army personnel who have been deployed in flood-hit districts since the first day of floods.

“I have also told the (Terengganu) Mentri Besar to inform me, the Armed Forces chief, the Army chief or any Armed Forces representatives at flood operation centres directly for any additional needs,” he said.

Hishammuddin added that with floodwater in some areas in other flood-hit states having receded, the focus during the post-flood period is now on the cleaning works with help needed in restoring the damaged roads, houses and bridges.
