KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has described the Melaka State Election as the initial skirmish before the major battle takes place in the 15th General Election (GE15).

He urged party supporters to reflect, learn and realise what the people and the nation had to face after Umno lost in 2018.

He said it is time for all to stand shoulder to shoulder, cooperate and together redeem the truth.

“So win and take power, which is the talisman to strengthen the spirit of Umno for the sake of religion, race and country.

“Put aside the voices that seek to dissolve and weaken, because now is the time for Umno to rise.

“The people of Melaka should uphold the banners of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) proudly throughout Melaka when the time comes.

“The Melaka State Election is the start. GE-15 is our destination. The prosperity of the people and the country is our mission,” he said in a post on Facebook today.

He said Umno supporters also needed to prove their consensus and show their strength.

“Let there be no more disappointment because that is what weakened and destroyed Umno once upon a time.

“Umno has been our home for a long time, now and forever, so understand its service and devotion as well as its loyalty,” he said.

Last week, the EC set Nov 20 as the polling day for the Melaka state election with nominations on Nov 8 and early voting on Nov 16.

The Melaka State Legislative Assembly has 28 seats with 14 held by BN, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (2), DAP (7), PKR (2), Parti Amanah Negara (2), and Independent (1).

In GE14, Pakatan Harapan won 15 seats while 13 seats were garnered by BN. It saw PH forming the state government, with Amanah’s Adly Zahari becoming the Chief Minister.

The upcoming polls were called following the revocation of support for caretaker chief minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali by four state assemblymen.

They are former Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron, Datuk Nor Azman Hassan, Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad, and Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee.
