Umno has suspended youth leader Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris for six years for violating the party’s constitution.
The wing’s executive council member, who is often referred to as Papagomo – although he has denied that he is the blogger who goes by that moniker – had his membership suspended on Aug 27, Malaysiakini reported.
“We would like to inform you that the Supreme Council met on Aug 27 and decided that your membership rights will be suspended for six years effective Aug 27, 2021 or for two Umno election cycles,” a letter by Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, read.
Ahmad said the council found that Muhammad Azri had breached numerous parts of the constitution, including requirements for members to toe the party line and respect decisions made by the party, among others.
When contacted by the portal, Muhammad Azri defended his call for Umno to work with Bersatu.
The party had earlier this year – prior to retracting its support for former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government – said it would not work with Bersatu in the next general election.
Muhammad Azri said he would not appeal the suspension.
“I will not appeal because I did not do anything wrong.
“If they say I invited Umno to support Bersatu and that I did not respect the resolution of the Umno general assembly, I believe the government we have today is a result of Umno and Bersatu working together. Therefore, I don’t know what is wrong about this,” Malaysiakini quoted him as saying.
He went on to claim that the party was being held hostage by certain individuals. He did not name the individuals.
