Fighting continues in Yemen’s city of Maarib, with pro-Saudi forces carrying out an offensive from the southwest against encroaching Houthi forces. Saudi warplanes carried out overnight airstrikes to support the advance, killing at least 12 Houthis.
Houthi media also reported the strikes, saying that there were 15 Saudi airstrikes in those districts in the past 24 hours. They did not confirmed the number of deaths.
Fighting in Maarib has been ongoing since February, and it is the last city controlled by the pro-Saudi side in the territory that used to be Northern Yemen. The Houthis seemed to hope that taking over the city would be a major symbolic victory.
Several nations have been pushing for peace talks in Yemen, and Maarib seems to be a sticking point on that, with both sides trying to have a decisive win to go into the talks in a stronger position. Instead they’ve just fought indecisively for months.
